Hair and Makeup
Ok! Let’s start from the top down, shall we?
I’ll start by saying I want nothing more then for you to be comfortable in your own skin! Getting relaxed in front of the camera is no easy task at first, but if you’re comfortable, it helps! If hair and makeup is something you really struggle with, that’s ok, Id just suggest a quick visit to the salon before our session. If a hair

and makeup stylist is a bit out of your budget (I totally get it!) I have a few tips to share!
Apply your makeup in natural light if possible. This helps you know if your foundation matches the skin on your neck and chest.
Stay away from mineral makeup! In portraits it tends to pick up light and cast a lot of shine. A natural, Matte look is best.
Play up your eyes! Avoid Shimmer or glitter, and a heavy smokey eye, as they can make you look older and tired. Think neutrals like Golden Brown. Use your eyeliner and mascara to make those peepers POP but be careful of the dreaded raccoon eyes! (I love focusing on the peepers!)
Blush can be applied a bit heavier (in moderation) but again stay away from anything with too much shimmer.
And finally, the lips! Hydrate them lips! And don’t forget to bring some wet wipes for the kids’ cookie and booger faces! (I’ll have some as well, just ask!). The best lip color to use is again something more natural, but if your feeling frisky, this is the one area you CAN play it up a bit! Stay away from lipsticks, as they smear. Lip stains are awesome though! Just check those teeth before your session! Speaking of teeth, don’t forget to brush and floss beforehand! (I wouldn’t mention it if it didn’t happen before!)
As for hair, curls can be the most flattering on woman! Straight hair is good too, Id just suggest a good tousle and watch for flyaways! If your hair color could use a refresh, right before your session is a good time! Hair always looks so silky and vibrant right after a coloring!
When it comes to your beautiful children, I’d suggest they get their hair cut before our big day. If they are growing it out, a morning shower and style is more then worth the trouble they will give you. A good bribe is sometimes necessary, and if they are young, know I always keep some fruit snacks and juice boxes handy for after our session!
Side notes to hats. People love them! And that’s ok, but they can cast a shadow on your face. If it’s a matter of insecurity about hair loss, wear the hat, but maybe pick one that hasn’t been through an engine repair, or hunting season! If I know men, they have a few to choose from! If you have some fun hats as well, bring them! We can do pictures with and without, to give you some options! Layering accessories and jackets is a great way to add personality!
